Okay, so maybe we aren’t “dummies”, but we are too busy for all that contractor mush women! I am not implying we do not know as much as men, I’m not sexist against myself! I’m just saying we have a lot of other things on our mind, like taking care of our family, working, getting our nails and hair done, shopping, and just being beautifully beautiful and awesome. Would you agree with that? Also, if you are like me, a single mother that works, then we definitely don’t have time to know how to spot a legit contractor when we see one. Based on my experience and hearing my ex boyfriend go crazy on some contractors for their mistakes, I have put together a little list of what to look for.
First, you need to know if this guy is legit. Is he going to get the job done and done well. Does he return your phone calls in a timely manner, answer your questions, is he trustworthy, WHO IS THIS GUY? So first and foremost, does he even have a business card? If he does, it should have an address to a physical location, and it should obviously have a telephone number. He shouldn’t drive a big truck that looks like a bucket of tools either. I’m not saying look for the rich contractor who gets the most business and whose dad was probably the founder. I just mean his ride needs to be clean and maintained. This is a business, and he should act like it and look like it.
Ladies, let’s be realistic. When the door to door, or sometimes even car to car contractor comes around trying to earn your business with his charm or promises we fall into it. I know I have. I have paid for it later too! Point is, no matter how promising they seem, do not give that guy your business. You have no clue who this guy is or any background on him, references, nothing. Anyone with a personality can sell door to door.
Lastly, do a background check on his financial stability, insurance, and any litigations he might have against him, and of course check his license! Duh! If you need more info or just want to double check all of the variables to look for there are plenty of websites about contractors for dummies!
